Dùng để nói việc mất người này thì lấy người khác thay vào, nhất là trong quan hệ hôn nhân khi chị mất hoặc không còn thì em thay thế. Thành ngữ phản ánh quan niệm hôn nhân cũ, coi việc thay thế là điều có thể chấp nhận.

Used to say that when one person is lost, another is taken as a substitute, especially in marriage when a younger sister replaces an older one. It reflects an old view of marriage in which such substitution was considered acceptable.
